Verify Your Account Is Not a Junior Account
First, if you can't speak in-game and you also cannot hear anyone else, the most likely reason for this is that your account is a junior account. You can verify this by navigating to your Watch Menu > Settings > Audio. If you are on a junior account, you will see a message on this screen indicating that your account is a junior account.
If you have confirmed that you are not on a junior account, please keep reading for some general and device-specific troubleshooting tips.
Verify Your Account Does Not Have a Voice Chat Restriction
If your account has received a voice chat restriction, it will be automatically removed after the restriction period has ended. Active restrictions currently applied to your account and when they end will be shown on your watch. Please be sure to always abide by our Code of Conduct while playing to prevent voice chat restrictions.
Note: if another account associated with your account receives a voice chat restriction, the restriction will also apply to your account. To avoid sharing these restrictions, never share your account details with others or log into another player's account.
Verify You Have Voice Chat Enabled In-Game:
To enable voice chat in-game, open your watch, then follow the below steps:
- Click on Settings (the gear symbol in the top right corner of the watch menu).
- Once there, click the "Audio" tab. Set your microphone to either "Push-to-Talk" or "Always On."
- Try talking while on this screen. You should see the sound meter reflect what Rec Room is hearing from your mic.
- If you're also having trouble hearing others, scroll down to the bottom of that same "Audio" tab to ensure you have "Voices I Can Hear" to the correct setting for your preferred voice chat level (e.g. "Favorite Friends," "Friends," or "All").
If you turn on your voice chat settings and continue experiencing issues, check your device's audio input, or try re-connecting your headset or microphone to ensure the device is properly connected. Also verify that your microphone isn't muted locally via a button or similar mechanism.
If the above does not resolve your issue, check the platform-specific sections below for some additional troubleshooting tips.

Mobile Device (Apple/Android)
- First uninstall and reinstall Rec Room on your mobile device. When you launch the game after the reinstallation, make sure you press "allow" when prompted to give Rec Room permission to access your microphone.
- Check that you are not accidentally tapping the microphone icon on the top right corner of the screen on your mobile device. (You can tap that mic symbol to quickly toggle your mic on and off.)
PC
- Ensure that in your Windows recording devices (right click the speaker icon at the bottom right of the desktop > select Sounds or Recording devices), your headset microphone is set to be the default device for recording and communication. Ensure all other microphones are disabled (right click > disable).
- You must restart Rec Room after changing the default device in order for the change to take effect.
- Ensure your Windows privacy settings have your microphone enabled: Windows > privacy > microphone > "allow apps to access microphone".
- To ensure that your microphone isn't broken, try listening to the device.
- Right click the speaker icon at the bottom right of the desktop > Recording devices > find and right click your chosen mic (make sure its enabled) > properties > listen tab > check the 'listen to this device' box > hit apply. If you can't hear yourself through the selected playback device, the microphone itself may be broken.
- VR users: make sure your headset is set as the preferred audio input in your Oculus Home or SteamVR settings.
- Oculus Home - gear icon at the top right > Settings > Devices > Rift headset > Audio Input in VR should be set to the headset microphone and the transmit volume should be up.
- SteamVR - in the small status window click the small downward arrow next to the 'Steam VR' text > Settings > Audio > ensure your 'Set Record Device to' dropdown is set to your headset microphone.
